It is a question that comes up for most people somewhere between the proposal and the wedding day. How should the rings sit together? Do they need to match? And if you already have an engagement ring, how do you choose a wedding band that works with it?

There are no absolute rules, but there are a few things worth thinking through.

Do they need to match?

No. But they need to work together on the finger, which is a different thing.

A perfect match, where the wedding band is made to sit flush against the engagement ring, gives a clean and cohesive look. It is the classic choice and always works well. But it requires a little planning, and ideally choosing or ordering the wedding band with the engagement ring in hand.

Contrasting rings, for example a simple plain band alongside a more detailed engagement ring, can look just as good. Here it is the proportions and spacing that matter. A very slim band next to a bold engagement ring can either balance it out or disappear. It is worth trying on both options.

Stacked rings, where you wear several thin bands on the same finger, are a modern and flexible approach. It leaves room to add rings over time and create something that changes and grows.

Metal

The simplest approach is to keep the same metal on both rings. Yellow gold with yellow gold, white gold with white gold. It gives a cohesive look without having to think too hard.

But it is not a requirement. Mixed metals work when done with intention. A white gold wedding band alongside a yellow gold engagement ring can look beautiful, as long as the rings complement each other in shape and feel.

At Lovelei we offer rings in 14k and 18k gold in yellow and white gold. The visual difference between 14k and 18k is subtle, but both work well together if you choose to mix them.

Shape and fit — worth thinking about from the start

One thing worth keeping in mind when choosing an engagement ring is how it will work together with a wedding band further down the line. Many people want the rings to sit flush against each other, and not all engagement rings are suited for that. Three stone rings and certain other styles can make it difficult for a straight wedding band to sit close without a gap.

In Lovelei's product descriptions you will always find information about whether a ring can be paired with a wedding band sitting flush against it, so that is always a good place to start. If you have questions along the way, do not hesitate to get in touch, we are happy to go through the options available for whichever ring you are considering.

Ordering in good time

All Lovelei rings are made to order with a production time of four to six weeks. If the rings need to sit flush against each other we recommend getting in touch well ahead of the wedding, ideally with the engagement ring available, so we can create something that truly works together.
