Buying an engagement ring is one of those rare purchases that carries real weight. Not just financially, but emotionally. You want to get it right. The good news is that it does not have to be overwhelming — once you know what to look for, the process becomes a lot more straightforward.
This guide walks you through everything you need to know, from understanding diamond quality to finding the right fit without giving anything away.
Start with the diamond
The quality of a diamond is measured across four characteristics: cut, color, clarity and carat weight, known as the 4Cs. Of the four, cut is the most important. It determines how the diamond interacts with light — how much it sparkles, how alive it looks on the finger. A well-cut diamond will always outshine a larger stone with a poor cut.
At Lovelei, we handpick excellent cut diamonds for all stones 0.30ct and above. It is the one thing we will not compromise on.
Color refers to how close to colorless a white diamond is. The scale runs from D (completely colorless) to Z (visibly yellow). The difference between D and G is nearly impossible to detect with the naked eye, so there is no need to go to the very top of the scale if you want to allocate your budget thoughtfully.
Clarity measures the presence of inclusions — tiny natural characteristics within the stone. A diamond graded VS1 or VS2 will look completely clean to the naked eye, which is what matters most when the ring is actually being worn.
Carat is simply the weight of the diamond. Keep in mind that two diamonds of the same carat weight can look very different depending on how they are cut and what shape they are.
Choosing a diamond shape
The shape of the diamond changes the entire personality of a ring. There is no right answer here — it comes down to the style of the person who will be wearing it.
Round brilliant is the classic choice and for good reason. Its 57 facets are designed to maximize light return, making it the most brilliant of all shapes. It works on every hand and suits every style.
Oval has become one of the most popular shapes in recent years. It has a soft, elongated silhouette that tends to make the finger look longer, and it often appears larger than a round diamond of the same carat weight.
Emerald cut is long and rectangular with step-cut facets that create a deep, mirror-like reflection rather than the intense sparkle of a brilliant cut. It is understated and sophisticated and requires a high clarity grade because the large open table makes inclusions more visible.
Cushion cut has rounded corners and a softer, slightly vintage feel. It tends to have a warmer glow rather than sharp brilliance.
Pear and marquise are for those who want something more distinctive. Both shapes elongate the finger and make a statement.
Choosing a metal
The metal sets the overall tone of the ring and also determines its durability over time.
White gold gives a clean, contemporary look. It is rhodium plated to achieve its bright white finish, which may need refreshing every few years depending on wear.
Rose gold has a romantic warmth to it. The slight pink hue comes from copper in the alloy, and it pairs beautifully with both warm and cool skin tones.
Platinum is the most durable option. It is naturally white, heavier than gold and develops a soft patina over time rather than wearing away. It is the premium choice for a ring that is meant to last a lifetime without much maintenance.
Finding the right ring size
If you are proposing, you may want to keep things a surprise — which makes the sizing part a little tricky. A few approaches that work well.
If your partner already wears rings, borrow one they wear on their ring finger and trace the inside onto a piece of paper. A jeweler can measure the diameter from there.
Ask someone close to your partner who can keep a secret. A sibling or best friend usually knows, or can find out without raising suspicion.
If you are not sure, it is always better to go slightly larger than smaller. Resizing down is simpler than resizing up. At Lovelei all our rings are made to order, and we will always help you get the fit exactly right after the proposal.
Lab-grown diamonds
All Lovelei engagement rings are set with lab-grown diamonds and gemstones. Lab-grown diamonds are physically, chemically and optically identical to mined diamonds. The only difference is where they come from.
They are grown in a controlled environment rather than extracted from the earth, which means no large-scale land disruption, significantly lower carbon emissions and no ethical concerns around sourcing. Every diamond comes with an IGI certificate, graded by the same standards as mined diamonds.
It is the same diamond. Just created differently.
A few things worth knowing before you buy
Lovelei rings are made to order with a production time of four to six weeks. This is not a limitation — it is what makes each piece genuinely yours, made specifically for the person who will wear it.
